Professional Services Automation Software Options 2027

Most professional services firms can tell you what they billed last month. Far fewer can confidently say which projects actually made money, or who will be free to staff the engagement closing next week. Professional Services Automation (PSA) software is built to close that gap between the work and the money.

This guide covers ten PSA platforms for consultancies, IT services firms, marketing agencies, managed service providers and specialist practices heading into 2027, split into enterprise and mid-market options. Viewpoint Analysis is an independent Technology Matchmaker, helping businesses find and select the right technology fast, and this report is written to be read before you speak to vendors. Our aim is to be the first place buyers go to learn about the enterprise software market and the options open to them.

A note on scope: every PSA platform includes time and expense capture, but the category goes much further. If your main need is capturing time and invoicing clients, our companion guide Time and Expense Management Software Options covers that narrower category, and we signpost the overlap throughout this report.

Included Professional Services Automation Software Vendors

This guide covers the following PSA platforms, grouped into enterprise and mid-market tiers. Our viewpoint on each vendor follows below.

Enterprise: Certinia | Kantata | Deltek Vantagepoint | Microsoft Dynamics 365 Project Operations | Workday Professional Services Automation

Mid-Market and Growth: Scoro | Teamwork.com | Parallax | NetSuite SuiteProjects | Rocketlane

What is Professional Services Automation Software?

Professional Services Automation software gives project-based businesses one connected platform for the whole delivery lifecycle, from opportunity and resourcing through project execution, time and expense capture, billing and performance reporting. Unlike general project management tools, PSA platforms are built around the financial realities of professional services: billable utilisation, margin by project, revenue recognition and client billing accuracy. The aim is a single system of record that connects the work being done to the money being made, as close to real time as possible.

The category sits where project management, resource management, finance and CRM meet, and each platform weights those parts differently. Some are strongest on project delivery, some on financial management and some on resource optimisation, so be clear which matters most to your firm before you shortlist.

Every platform in this guide includes time and expense capture as a core module. What separates a PSA platform from a time and expense tool is what surrounds that core: project planning, resource management, revenue recognition and portfolio reporting. PSA becomes the right investment when the firm needs those capabilities inside the same connected system.

PSA, Professional Services ERP or Resource Management?

These three categories overlap and are often confused. A PSA platform runs project delivery and billing, and usually connects to a separate finance system. A professional services ERP also brings the general ledger, procurement and project accounting into the same system. A dedicated resource management platform concentrates on scheduling and capacity, and sits alongside whatever PSA or project tools you already run. Several vendors in this guide, including Deltek, Workday, Microsoft and NetSuite, cover more than one of these.

PSA sits within Viewpoint Analysis's Finance and ERP Technology area, and you can explore the wider picture on our Professional Services page. These related buying guides go into more detail:

How to Find Professional Services Automation Software

PSA is a smaller, more specialist market than CRM or ERP, but the wrong platform choice is expensive to reverse: implementations are significant investments and switching is disruptive. Starting with a credible, well-matched longlist matters. The Longlist Builder at Viewpoint Analysis generates a tailored list of PSA platforms matched to your firm size, sector and requirements, free and in minutes, powered by HUEY, our AI Technology Analysis Agent.

For firms that prefer a more managed process, the Technology Matchmaker Service brings relevant PSA vendors directly to your team. Viewpoint Analysis interviews your leadership team, writes a Challenge Brief capturing your firm's specific operational challenges, and runs a structured vendor pitch process, so your time goes on evaluating platforms rather than searching for them.

Enterprise Professional Services Automation Software Options 2027

Certinia (formerly FinancialForce) is a PSA and services finance platform built natively on Salesforce, which makes it a natural option for firms that already run Salesforce CRM and want project delivery, resourcing and billing on the same data platform. When a deal closes in Salesforce, project setup, staffing and billing can begin without re-keying data. Certinia covers project management, time and expenses, resource management, revenue recognition and services analytics, with financial depth that suits mid-sized and large services organisations. It has added AI agents for staffing and customer success, built on Salesforce's Agentforce, and in July 2026 it acquired Moonnox, a Chicago-based provider of automation and AI agents for services delivery teams. Certinia is backed by Haveli Investments.

Our Viewpoint: Certinia gives Salesforce-centred services firms a single thread from closed deal to delivered and billed project.

Kantata brings together Mavenlink and Kimble, which merged in 2021, and is a purpose-built PSA platform for mid-sized and large professional services firms. It is offered in two forms: Kantata SX, which runs on Salesforce, and Kantata OX for firms that prefer an open infrastructure. Its strength is the link between resource management, project financials and business intelligence, which gives firm leaders a live view of utilisation, margin and project health across the portfolio. Kantata has moved quickly on AI, adding a Resourcing Agent, an Expertise Agent and, in September 2026, Agent Studio, which lets practice leads describe a task in plain language and publish their own agent without a developer. It is typically deployed by consulting, IT services, marketing services and technology implementation firms.

Our Viewpoint: A purpose-built PSA choice for firms that want utilisation and project margin in plain view, with growing scope to turn their own delivery know-how into AI agents.

Deltek Vantagepoint is a project-based ERP and PSA platform designed for architecture, engineering and government contracting firms, with deep project accounting and compliance capability. It covers CRM, project management, resource planning, time and expense, billing and financials in one system built around the project lifecycle. For firms with US federal contracts, its compliance features, DCAA audit support and overhead rate management are genuine differentiators. Deltek is part of Roper Technologies and ships regular Vantagepoint releases, and its long-established partner network and large installed base make peer reference checks straightforward.

Our Viewpoint: The specialist option for architecture, engineering and government contracting firms that need project accounting and compliance built in from day one.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Project Operations brings PSA capability into the Microsoft ecosystem, connecting project management, resource management, time and expense and project accounting with the wider Dynamics 365 suite for finance, CRM and HR. Organisations already running Dynamics, or deeply embedded in the Microsoft stack, get PSA capability without adding a separate platform, and links to Microsoft Teams, Power BI and the Power Platform add value for firms that already use them. Microsoft's 2026 release plans brought what-if analysis on estimates and accrued revenue reconciliation, with subscription billing and change order management in preview. Implementation usually involves a Microsoft partner, and results depend heavily on implementation quality.

Our Viewpoint: A sensible route to PSA for Microsoft-centred firms that want project operations to share data with their finance and CRM systems.

Workday Professional Services Automation extends Workday's HR and finance platform into project operations, covering project planning, skills-based staffing, time tracking, expenses, project billing and revenue recognition. Because it shares a platform with Workday HCM and Financial Management, resourcing decisions sit next to workforce planning and project financials post straight to the general ledger. Services CPQ supports quoting, AI features include resource recommendations and anomaly detection in project financials, and billing covers time and materials, fixed fee, subscription and usage models. It is typically chosen by larger services organisations that have already standardised on Workday. Firms reviewing their wider Workday estate can also read our Workday Alternatives report.

Our Viewpoint: A strong fit for larger firms already on Workday that want people, projects and finance managed in one place.

Mid-Market and Growth Professional Services Automation Options 2027

Scoro is an Estonian-founded, London-based business management platform covering quotes, projects, time tracking, resource planning, billing and reporting for agencies, consultancies and other professional services firms. It gives smaller and mid-sized firms one place to manage both work and finances, and its quote-to-invoice flow cuts the admin involved in running client work. In January 2026 Scoro acquired Envoice, an AI-based bill and expense management company, so that approved costs flow into project budgets and margins update sooner. Its AI assistant, ELI, works from the firm's own project and financial data. Scoro is a practical fit for firms that have outgrown a project management tool but do not need an enterprise PSA implementation.

Our Viewpoint: Scoro gives agencies and consultancies a single view of quotes, delivery and margin, without a heavy implementation.

Teamwork.com is a project management platform for client work, headquartered in Cork, Ireland, and aimed at agencies and client services teams. It combines project delivery with time tracking against budgets, resource management, profitability reporting and client collaboration, so teams can plan, deliver and invoice client work from one platform. Pricing and onboarding are accessible for smaller firms, and integrations with HubSpot, QuickBooks and Xero let it fit an existing stack without replacing core systems. Buyers whose priority is project delivery rather than services finance may also find our Project Management Software Options report useful.

Our Viewpoint: An affordable, approachable step up for agencies that need time, budgets and billing alongside their projects.

Parallax is a resource management and forecasting platform built for professional services firms, based in Minnesota. It is designed for firms where the central question is who is available, what they are working on and how that maps to future project demand. Parallax connects pipeline and project plans to capacity forecasts, so leaders can see hiring needs and over-commitment early, and it reports on project margin and utilisation. Since launching Parallax Timesheets in late 2024 it can pre-fill timesheets from planned time, while still integrating with existing project, timesheet and billing tools for firms that want to keep them. For more options focused on scheduling and capacity, see our Resource Management Software report.

Our Viewpoint: Parallax brings real clarity to capacity planning for firms where utilisation is the number that matters most.

NetSuite SuiteProjects (formerly NetSuite Services Resource Planning) adds PSA capability to the NetSuite ERP platform, covering project management, resource allocation, job costing, project budgeting, time and expense, charge-based billing and revenue recognition. For firms that already run NetSuite for finance, it extends the same system into project operations without a separate PSA platform. Oracle NetSuite also offers SuiteProjects Pro, the former OpenAir product renamed in 2025, as a separate PSA application that integrates with NetSuite for firms that need more advanced services capability. Both are typically used by technology companies, IT services firms and professional services organisations already on NetSuite. Firms reviewing their wider NetSuite estate may find our NetSuite Alternatives report useful.

Our Viewpoint: A natural next step for NetSuite customers that want projects, resources and billing inside the ERP they already run.

Rocketlane appears in both this guide and our companion Time and Expense Management Software Options report because it sits across the boundary between the two categories. It combines project management, resource management, time tracking, billing and client collaboration in a PSA platform designed for implementation teams, customer onboarding and the professional services arms of SaaS businesses. Its branded client portal makes the customer part of the delivery plan, and its Nitro agentic AI layer automates routine delivery tasks. Rocketlane raised $60 million from Insight Partners in March 2026 to fund its next stage of growth. For firms where the client-facing delivery experience matters as much as internal operations, it offers a distinctive approach.

Our Viewpoint: A strong option for SaaS and implementation teams that want customers to feel part of a well-run project from the first day.

What Has Changed in the PSA Market Since Our Last Update?

The biggest shift since our 2026 report is the move from AI features to AI agents that take on parts of the job. Kantata launched Agent Studio in September 2026 so firms can build agents around their own delivery standards. Certinia added staffing and customer success agents, then bought Moonnox to extend automation into delivery work, while Rocketlane has built its platform around the Nitro agentic layer.

There has been consolidation at the edges of the category too. Scoro bought Envoice to bring AI-based bill and expense capture into project costing, and Oracle renamed OpenAir as NetSuite SuiteProjects Pro, which is worth knowing when you read older references and partner material. Investment in the category remains strong, with Rocketlane's $60 million raise in March 2026.

For buyers, the useful question is which specific tasks a platform's agents can handle today, what data they work from, and who in your firm will check their output. Ask vendors to show their agents working on your own resourcing and billing scenarios rather than a scripted demo.

How to Select Professional Services Automation Software

Start by establishing whether you need a full PSA platform or a more focused time and billing tool. PSA implementations touch project delivery, resource management, finance and billing at the same time, and they need organisational change alongside the technology. If your main pain points are time capture accuracy and invoicing speed rather than resource planning and portfolio visibility, a lighter tool may be a faster, lower-risk path to value, and our Time and Expense Management Software Options guide covers those options. If utilisation, project margin reporting and multi-project portfolio management are genuinely on the agenda, PSA is the right category.

Examine the fit between your firm's revenue model and each platform's billing and revenue recognition. Firms bill in different ways, including time and materials, fixed fee, milestone, retainer and, increasingly, subscription, and revenue recognition rules vary accordingly. Some platforms handle this well out of the box; others need configuration or add-ons. Because ASC 606 and IFRS 15 compliance is involved, treat revenue recognition as a scored evaluation criterion rather than a nice-to-have. If recurring and usage-based revenue is a large part of your model, read our Revenue Lifecycle Management Software Options report alongside this one.

Resource management capability varies considerably across the category. Some platforms offer skills-based resourcing, forward capacity planning and scenario modelling; others provide little more than a basic Gantt-based assignment view. The right level depends on your firm's size and the complexity of your resourcing decisions, because a 30-person consultancy and a 500-person IT services firm have very different needs. Assess the resource management module against your actual scheduling and capacity planning workflow, not just the feature list.

Ecosystem fit matters as much as standalone capability. Platforms that sit within a wider ERP or CRM ecosystem, such as Certinia and Kantata SX on Salesforce, Project Operations on Dynamics 365, or SuiteProjects within NetSuite, offer real integration advantages for firms already using those platforms. Standalone PSA tools offer more flexibility but need more integration work. Map your existing stack before shortlisting and weight ecosystem fit accordingly. For the wider finance picture, see our ERP Software Options and Finance AI Software Options guides.

When you are ready to put requirements to vendors, our Finance Software RFP Template is a practical starting point, and the Enterprise Software Selection Playbook 2026 sets out the full methodology for buyers who want to go deeper on evaluation approach.

Summary

The PSA market heading into 2027 still follows two broad buying patterns. The first is ecosystem consolidation: firms choose Certinia, Project Operations, Workday or NetSuite because PSA sits inside a platform they already rely on for CRM, finance or HR. The second is specialisation: firms choose Kantata, Deltek Vantagepoint, Scoro or Rocketlane because PSA depth or sector fit matters more to them than ecosystem, and they are willing to invest in integration to get it.

Resource visibility remains the most common reason firms move to PSA. Many already have adequate time tracking and billing; what they lack is a reliable view of who is available, what the pipeline needs and where over-commitment is building. Platforms that surface that insight in a form project directors will actually use, and that increasingly let AI agents act on it, hold a real advantage.

If you are still deciding between a time and billing tool and a full PSA platform, the test is simple. If resource management and portfolio-level financial reporting are on your requirements list, PSA is the right category. If not, start with our Time and Expense Management Software Options guide.
