If you are looking at endpoint management or cybersecurity platforms, you have almost certainly come across Tanium. The company has built its reputation on real time visibility and control across millions of endpoints, and it now positions itself at the centre of what it calls Autonomous IT, blending endpoint management, exposure management and security operations into a single platform. For enterprise IT and security leaders weighing up how to consolidate fragmented tooling, understanding what Tanium actually does and where it fits is a useful starting point.
Viewpoint Analysis is a Technology Matchmaker, helping businesses to quickly find and select new enterprise technology. Our aim is to be the place enterprise buyers go to understand the software and technology market before speaking to vendors. Read on to learn more about Tanium.
Who Are Tanium?
Tanium was founded in 2007 by the father and son team of David and Orion Hindawi, who had previously built and sold the systems management company BigFix. The business is headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, with a significant operations base in Emeryville, California, and additional offices supporting customers across EMEA and Asia Pacific.
Dan Streetman has served as Chief Executive Officer since February 2023, having previously led TIBCO Software and Allvue Systems. Orion Hindawi moved into the role of executive chairman at that point, continuing to shape product strategy and customer relationships, while David Hindawi holds the title of chairman emeritus. Tanium remains a privately held company and has raised over a billion dollars in funding to date, with backers including Andreessen Horowitz and TPG Growth.
Today, Tanium describes itself as a leader in Autonomous IT, supporting a large base of global enterprises and government bodies that rely on the platform to see, control and remediate every endpoint across their environment, often at very large scale and in real time. The business has grown into a substantial player in the cybersecurity and IT operations market. Tanium has reported annual recurring revenue passing 700 million dollars, with a valuation around 9 billion dollars and total funding raised of over 1.1 billion dollars from investors including Andreessen Horowitz and TPG Growth. The company employs around 2,000 people globally and has appeared on the Forbes Cloud 100 list for ten consecutive years, most recently ranking inside the top 20 private cloud companies in the world.

What Does Tanium Do?
Tanium gives IT and security teams a single, real time view of every endpoint across an organisation, whether that is a laptop, server, virtual machine or cloud workload. Rather than relying on periodic scans or sampled data, the platform queries endpoints directly and returns answers in seconds, which is a meaningful difference for teams trying to understand exposure or respond to an incident while it is still unfolding.
That real time data underpins what Tanium calls Converged Endpoint Management, or XEM, which brings together asset discovery, patch management, configuration compliance, vulnerability assessment and incident response on one platform rather than as separate, disconnected tools. Buyers evaluating the IT Operations Technology market will recognise this as a direct response to the tool sprawl that many enterprises have accumulated over the years, where endpoint visibility, patching and security each sit in their own siloed system.
More recently, Tanium has pushed into what it terms Autonomous Endpoint Management, layering AI driven automation on top of its real time data to recommend, and in some cases carry out, remediation actions automatically. The stated intent is to reduce the manual burden on stretched IT and security teams while keeping humans firmly in control of what gets automated and what does not.
The platform is used across a wide range of sectors, including retail, financial services, manufacturing, healthcare and government, and is particularly well suited to large, complex estates where consistent visibility has historically been hard to achieve. Tanium reports that seven of the ten biggest US retailers and eight of the ten biggest commercial banks use its platform, alongside large federal and defence customers, with its technology helping to secure tens of millions of endpoints worldwide.
A single, lightweight agent installed on each endpoint underpins all of this. Tanium's linear chain architecture allows that agent to communicate peer to peer across the network rather than relying on a central server to poll every device individually, which is part of how the platform is able to query and return results from hundreds of thousands of endpoints in seconds rather than hours. For IT leaders managing large, distributed estates, that architectural choice has a direct bearing on how confidently they can answer basic but often surprisingly difficult questions, such as how many devices they actually have, what is running on them, and whether they are patched and compliant.
More recent product launches reflect where Tanium is investing next. Tanium Automate, generally available since September 2024, lets teams chain together a series of remediation actions into repeatable, automated sequences. Tanium Guardian uses real time data to flag emerging issues such as zero day vulnerabilities and recommend prioritised actions. Tanium has also extended its reach beyond traditional endpoints, launching Tanium Cloud Workloads to manage containerised environments and a connector for Microsoft Intune that brings mobile device data into the same single source of truth.
Tanium Technology Areas
Tanium's platform spans several connected technology areas, all built on the same real time data layer. The areas a buyer engages with will depend on whether the priority is operational efficiency, security risk reduction, or both.
Endpoint Management. Real time asset discovery, software deployment and configuration management across the full device estate.
Exposure Management. Continuous vulnerability monitoring, risk scoring and prioritisation to focus remediation effort where it matters most.
Security Operations. Real time threat hunting, detection and response capabilities built on the same endpoint data used for IT operations.
Autonomous Patch Management. Automated identification and deployment of patches to reduce the time endpoints spend exposed to known vulnerabilities.
Digital Employee Experience. Monitoring of device performance and end user experience to flag issues before they affect productivity.
These areas are not sold as entirely separate products in the way many point solutions are. They draw on the same underlying real time data set, which is part of why Tanium positions itself as a converged platform rather than a bundle of acquired tools. For buyers currently running separate systems for asset inventory, patching and vulnerability scanning, that shared data layer is often the main source of the efficiency gains they are looking for.
Tanium Alternatives
Tanium sits in a crowded and fast moving market, competing with both established endpoint management vendors and newer cloud native security platforms. The right alternative for any given buyer usually comes down to whether the priority is breadth of unified endpoint management, depth of endpoint detection and response, or a lighter weight, cloud first approach to IT automation. Buyers running a formal evaluation will also want to weigh up implementation effort and total cost of ownership alongside feature coverage, since some of these platforms require significantly more integration work to reach the breadth that Tanium delivers out of the box.
CrowdStrike Falcon. Best known for endpoint detection and response and threat intelligence, CrowdStrike is a strong fit for security focused buyers, though it offers less depth in pure IT operations and patch management than Tanium.
Microsoft Intune. A natural choice for organisations already committed to the Microsoft ecosystem, Intune covers device management well but typically requires additional tools to match Tanium's real time visibility and remediation depth.
Qualys. Focused primarily on vulnerability and exposure management, Qualys is a relevant comparison for buyers prioritising risk and compliance reporting over broader endpoint operations.
Rapid7. Another exposure management and vulnerability detection specialist, Rapid7 is often considered alongside Tanium by security teams focused on attack surface visibility rather than day to day IT operations.
NinjaOne. A lighter weight, cloud native endpoint management platform that appeals to mid market organisations wanting fast deployment over the depth and scale that larger enterprises typically need from Tanium.
