If your business has ever juggled separate systems for payroll, IT device management, and HR records, only to watch a new hire's laptop arrive a week after their start date, you have felt the exact problem Rippling was built to solve. The San Francisco based company has grown into one of the most prominent names in workforce management software, built around the idea that HR, IT, payroll, and finance should run on one shared employee data layer rather than four disconnected systems. For enterprise IT and HR buyers comparing platforms in a crowded HCM market, understanding what makes Rippling different from a traditional HRIS or payroll provider is worth doing before any vendor conversation begins.
Viewpoint Analysis is a Technology Matchmaker, helping businesses to quickly find and select new enterprise technology. Our aim is to be the place enterprise buyers go to understand the software and technology market before speaking to vendors. Read on to learn more about Rippling.
Who Are Rippling?
Rippling was founded in 2016 in San Francisco by Parker Conrad and Prasanna Sankar. Conrad serves as CEO, having previously founded the HR and benefits platform Zenefits, while Sankar served as the company's first CTO before leaving in 2021. Rippling is headquartered in San Francisco, with additional offices across the United States, Ireland, the UK, India, and Australia.
Today, Rippling operates as a workforce management platform that unifies HR, IT, payroll, and spend management into a single system, built around what the company calls its Employee Graph, a shared data layer that automatically propagates changes across every connected module. Rather than treating HR, IT, and finance as separate disciplines with separate software, Rippling's pitch is that a single employee record should drive everything from device provisioning to payroll to expense policy.
The company has grown quickly and now serves more than 20,000 customers globally. It has raised over 1.2 billion dollars in funding from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, and Greenoaks Capital, and most recently closed a 450 million dollar Series G round in May 2025, valuing the business at 16.8 billion dollars.

What Does Rippling Do?
Rippling replaces the patchwork of point solutions that most growing businesses accumulate for HR, payroll, IT, and finance with a single platform built on shared employee data. Where many HR technology vendors bundle acquired or loosely integrated tools under one brand, Rippling's products are built natively on the same underlying data model, which means a change made in one module, such as a promotion or a location transfer, automatically updates payroll, benefits eligibility, and device access without manual re-entry.
The HR side of the platform covers the full employee lifecycle, including recruiting and applicant tracking, onboarding, benefits administration, performance management, and a learning management system. New hires can be onboarded in minutes, with offer letters, equipment, software access, and benefits enrolment all triggered from a single approved hire rather than coordinated separately across multiple teams.
On the IT side, Rippling provides device management, identity and access control, and software access governance, allowing administrators to provision or revoke access to laptops, applications, and systems the moment someone joins or leaves the business. This is the area that most clearly distinguishes Rippling from traditional HR software, since most HRIS or payroll vendors do not touch device and access management at all.
Rippling also runs payroll for employees and contractors across more than 185 countries, alongside a spend management suite covering corporate cards, expense management, bill pay, and procurement. The company has stated that it has more than 650 third party integrations, allowing the platform to connect into accounting, collaboration, and other business systems already in use.
Rippling Technology Areas
Rippling's product suite spans four broad functional areas, all built on its shared employee data foundation rather than operating as standalone modules.
• HR. Covers recruiting and applicant tracking, onboarding, benefits administration, performance management, and learning management across the full employee lifecycle.
• IT. Manages device provisioning, identity and access control, and software access governance, automatically tied to each employee's status and role.
• Payroll. Runs domestic and global payroll for employees and contractors across more than 185 countries, with automatic compliance for jurisdiction specific tax and wage rules.
• Spend Management. Provides corporate cards, expense management, bill pay, and procurement tools, with policies that can be tied directly to employee level and department.
Buyers exploring this category alongside other HR technology investments will find Rippling sits at the broader, more horizontal end of the market, competing with both specialist HRIS vendors and larger enterprise HCM platforms depending on which modules a buyer needs.
Rippling Alternatives
The HR and workforce management market is large and segmented by company size and geographic scope, and the strongest alternative to Rippling often depends on which part of its platform a buyer actually needs.
• Gusto. Gusto is the strongest fit for smaller US based businesses that want straightforward payroll, benefits, and HR basics without the IT and finance scope of Rippling's wider platform, and it is generally regarded as faster to set up and more transparently priced.
• BambooHR. BambooHR puts core HR functions such as employee records, onboarding, and performance management at the centre of the product, and is often preferred by HR teams that want a focused, easy to navigate HRIS rather than Rippling's broader IT and finance remit.
• Deel. Deel has built its business specifically around global hiring and Employer of Record services, and is widely seen as the strongest option for companies hiring across many countries without setting up local legal entities, an area where Rippling has historically been less specialised.
• Workday. Workday operates at the enterprise end of the market, with deep workforce planning, financial management, and multi entity capabilities for large organisations whose complexity goes beyond what Rippling is built to handle.
• ADP Workforce Now. ADP brings decades of payroll and compliance experience along with a large established service footprint, making it a common choice for mid sized businesses that prioritise vendor maturity and support depth over Rippling's more modern, modular approach.

Rippling Customer Examples
Rippling has built up a customer base spanning startups, fast growing scale ups, and established businesses across many sectors. The following examples are drawn from Rippling's own published customer stories and give a sense of how different organisations are using the platform.
• Chess.com. The online chess platform implemented Rippling in 2019 to manage its fully remote, roughly 200 person team of employees and contractors, replacing a split system of an HRIS for employees and spreadsheets for contractors. The switch gave the company a single source of truth for its workforce and cut onboarding time significantly.
• Barry's. The fitness brand uses Rippling to manage a complex, multi entity workforce across more than 53 US studio locations, including instructors, studio teams, and headquarters staff. The platform reduced the time to add a new hire to the system from around 15 minutes to as little as three, and cut the time needed to process location transfers and entity changes by a similar margin.
• Forterra. The autonomous ground vehicle company, which builds systems for defence and commercial customers, consolidated a fragmented HR, IT, and recruiting stack onto Rippling after experiencing what its Head of People described as tool fatigue across multiple disconnected systems. The move unified recruiting, onboarding, and spend management, and is also used to deliver safety and compliance training to its specialised workforce.
• Morning Consult. The survey research and data intelligence company used Rippling to support a rapid headcount increase, adding hundreds of employees while reducing the administrative burden on its People team. The company has reported saving around 500 hours annually across onboarding, offboarding, and reporting, while managing payroll, benefits, and devices for around 500 employees with a People team of two.
