Who are Datarails?

If you run finance for a mid-sized business and your team still lives in Excel for budgeting, reporting, and month-end close, Datarails is one of the vendors you have probably come across. Rather than asking finance teams to abandon spreadsheets for a new interface, Datarails automates the data collection and consolidation behind those spreadsheets, while leaving Excel as the front end. If you are using social media, you'll see Datarails is everywhere. This Vendor Profile aims to tell you more about them.

Viewpoint Analysis is a Technology Matchmaker, helping businesses to quickly find and select new enterprise technology. Our aim is to be the place enterprise buyers go to understand the software and technology market before speaking to vendors. Read on to learn more about Datarails.

Who Are Datarails?

Datarails was founded in 2015 by Didi Gurfinkel, Eyal Cohen, and Oded Har-Tal. Gurfinkel, who previously held a general management role at Cisco, leads the business as CEO, with Cohen as Chief Product and Operating Officer and Har-Tal as CTO. The company is now headquartered in New York City, with a significant research and development base in Israel, and has grown into a privately held business backed by venture investors, most recently closing a Series C funding round in early 2026.

The company describes itself as a financial operating system rather than simply an FP&A tool - which is a little different. It sits underneath a company's existing Excel models and connects to the accounting, ERP, CRM, and HR systems that finance teams already rely on, consolidating that data into one governed source that both people and AI tools can trust. The company has built out a broader platform over time, adding month end close, cash management, and spend control alongside its original FP&A product, and now serves several hundred customers across North America and Europe, most of them small and mid-sized businesses.

What Does Datarails Do?

Datarails is built to solve a problem that most finance teams recognise instantly: spreadsheets are flexible and familiar, but they break down once a business has more than one entity, more than one data source, or more than a handful of people editing the same model. Analysts end up spending days each month chasing down files, reconciling versions, and manually rekeying numbers from source systems into Excel, leaving far less time for the analysis that actually helps the business make decisions.

Datarails addresses this by sitting between Excel and the rest of a company's finance and operational systems. It connects to over 200 data sources, including ERPs such as NetSuite, SAP, and Microsoft Dynamics, accounting platforms like QuickBooks and Xero, CRM systems such as Salesforce and HubSpot, and HRIS tools including ADP and BambooHR, then automatically consolidates that data into a single, version-controlled database. Finance teams keep working in the Excel templates and formulas they already know, but those templates now pull live, reconciled numbers instead of manually copied figures.

On top of this consolidated data layer, Datarails adds real-time dashboards, scenario modelling, and an AI assistant that lets users ask questions about their financial data in plain language and get answers grounded in the underlying, governed numbers rather than a spreadsheet that might be several versions out of date. This combination of Excel familiarity with automated consolidation and AI querying sits within the broader finance and ERP technology market, where buyers are increasingly looking for tools that reduce manual work without forcing a wholesale change in how their teams operate.

Datarails Technology Areas

Datarails organises its platform around a small number of core finance workflows, each available as part of its wider FinanceOS suite. The main areas are:

  • Financial planning and analysis, covering budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and reporting, all built on top of Excel

  • Month-end close, providing task tracking and workflow management to help teams close the books faster and with a clearer audit trail

  • Cash management, giving real-time visibility into cash positions alongside forecasting and scenario analysis

  • Spend control, adding approval workflows and visibility over company spending as it happens

  • Data consolidation and integration, connecting over 200 accounting, ERP, CRM, HRIS, and BI systems into one governed source of data

  • AI powered analysis, including a natural language assistant that answers finance questions directly from the consolidated dataset

Buyers evaluating this space more broadly may find it useful to look at the Viewpoint Analysis finance and ERP technology page, which covers the wider category and the different types of vendor competing within it.

Datarails Alternatives

The FP&A software market has become genuinely crowded over the last few years, and Datarails sits in an interesting position. Its defining choice, keeping Excel as the interface rather than replacing it, sets it apart from platforms built as standalone applications, and this is usually the first thing that shapes how it gets compared against other vendors.

If you are exploring the FP&A market and want to understand who else you should be considering alongside Datarails, the Viewpoint Analysis Longlist Builder is a good place to start. Answer a few questions about your requirements and we will come back with a comprehensive report covering all the vendors worth considering for your shortlist - packaging up all our Software Options guides, our list of over 4,000 vendors, and so much more content.

Finance Software Longlist and Shortlist Builder

The most closely aligned solutions are:

  • Vena Solutions is probably the closest direct comparison, since it also builds its platform around native Excel and Microsoft 365 workflows rather than a separate interface. Vena tends to be positioned for larger, more process-heavy organisations, and reviewers often describe its implementations as more structured but also longer than a typical Datarails rollout.

  • Cube takes a similar Excel and spreadsheet-friendly approach but is generally aimed at smaller finance teams and startups looking for a lighter weight tool. Datarails is usually seen as the more scalable option of the two once a business grows past a very small finance function.

  • Planful is a fully cloud-based FP&A platform rather than an Excel-native one, offering strong budgeting, forecasting, and reporting capabilities as a standalone application. Businesses that are ready to move away from spreadsheets entirely, and want a more traditional, structured system, often consider Planful over Datarails.

  • Anaplan operates at the enterprise end of the market, with a connected planning model that goes well beyond finance into sales, supply chain, and workforce planning. It suits large organisations with complex, cross-functional modelling needs, but typically comes with a longer implementation and a higher cost than Datarails, which is built more for the small and mid-market end of the buyer spectrum.

If you are getting to the stage of running a formal evaluation across these types of platform, the Enterprise Software Selection Playbook covers how to review the market and run a professional evaluation to find the right option for your organisation's needs.

Datarails Customer Examples

Datarails publishes a wide range of verified customer stories on its own website, spanning logistics, media, real estate, and manufacturing businesses. A few examples give a sense of how different types of finance team are using the platform in practice.

  • GO HQ, which provides back office services for logistics and transportation companies delivering for carriers such as Amazon and FedEx, used Datarails to cut its board reporting process from three to five days down to a fraction of that time, with leadership now able to view live numbers themselves rather than waiting on manual updates.

  • Oxford Road, the largest audio media buying agency in the United States, placing campaigns for brands including Shopify and DraftKings, reduced its month end close time by roughly 80 percent after moving its reporting onto Datarails, replacing what had been a days-long manual close package.

  • Avenue One, a New York City-based real estate services company, reported saving upwards of 40 hours a month for its finance team after adopting Datarails, freeing up capacity that the business has redirected toward strategic analysis rather than data gathering.

  • Young Living, the essential oils manufacturer with operations across 18 countries, used Datarails to overhaul its FP&A processes and reported a significant productivity improvement across its finance function as a result.
