Who are Fin? Vendor Profile

Fin is the AI customer service platform formerly known as Intercom, and following the acquisition, it now belongs to Salesforce. The two companies confirmed on 10 September 2026 that Salesforce has completed its acquisition of Fin, a deal worth approximately 3.6 billion US dollars that was first announced back in June 2026.
For enterprise IT and customer service buyers, this is the kind of news that reshapes a shortlist overnight. Fin was already one of the most widely deployed AI agents in customer support, and it now sits inside the world's largest CRM vendor alongside Agentforce. Viewpoint Analysis is a Technology Matchmaker, helping businesses to quickly find and select new enterprise technology. Our aim is to be the place enterprise buyers go to understand the software and technology market before speaking to vendors. Read on to learn more about Fin from Salesforce.
Who Are Fin?
Fin was founded in 2011 in California and operated for fifteen years under the name Intercom, building a well-known customer messaging and helpdesk platform used by tens of thousands of businesses. In May 2026 the company renamed itself Fin, after the AI agent it had built, signalling that the AI product was becoming the core of the business rather than a feature within it. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, with additional offices in Chicago, Dublin, Sydney, London and Berlin.
Today, post the name change and after the acquisition, Fin describes itself as a Customer Agent company. Its core product resolves customer support queries end to end, across live chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone and Slack, without needing a human agent to step in for straightforward cases. The company reports it has more than 1,400 employees, serves over 30,000 companies, and had surpassed 400 million US dollars in annual recurring revenue prior to the Salesforce deal closing.
As part of the completed acquisition, Fin now operates within Salesforce's AI Labs. Salesforce has said Fin will continue to serve its existing customers and keep developing its AI models while its technology and team are folded into the Agentforce portfolio, Salesforce's own suite of AI agents.
What Does Fin Do?
Fin is an AI agent that handles customer service conversations from start to finish. Rather than simply suggesting answers to a human agent, it can resolve a query independently, drawing on a company's help centre, documentation and connected data sources, and it can take account actions rather than just answer questions. This puts Fin firmly in the Customer Experience Technology space, where AI agents, helpdesks and messaging tools compete to reduce ticket volumes and speed up resolution.
The AI Agent is built on Fin's own model layer, branded Apex, which the company describes as purpose built for support conversations rather than a general purpose language model wrapper. Underneath that sits a retrieval layer that pulls from a customer's knowledge base and connected systems, and an application layer used to train, test and deploy the agent's behaviour. Fin communicates in dozens of languages and is priced on a per-resolution basis, a model the company has published openly rather than keeping behind a sales quote.
Fin still owns the Intercom helpdesk, now positioned as the native home for the AI Agent, complete with a shared inbox, ticketing and a proactive messaging layer for onboarding and engagement. Recognising that many buyers already run a different support stack, Fin has also built versions of its AI Agent that plug into Salesforce, Freshdesk and HubSpot, so a business does not have to rip out its existing helpdesk to adopt the technology.
More recently, Fin has pushed beyond reactive ticket resolution. Fin Operator is a separate agent whose job is to manage and improve the performance of the AI Agent itself, effectively automating part of the AI operations role that support leaders previously did manually. Fin has also opened an API Platform, allowing developers to build directly on its underlying models, and has signalled voice support as the next major channel on its roadmap.
Fin Technology Areas
Fin's product set spans several distinct areas of the customer experience stack.
● AI Agent – the core customer facing agent that resolves support queries end to end across chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone and Slack.
● Fin Operator – a second agent that monitors and manages the performance of the AI Agent on behalf of the support operations team.
● Intercom Helpdesk – the native shared inbox, ticketing and messaging platform the AI Agent is built on top of.
● Fin for Salesforce, Freshdesk and HubSpot – versions of the AI Agent designed to sit on top of a business's existing helpdesk rather than the Intercom platform.
●AI Technology and API Platform – Fin's proprietary Apex models, opened up so developers can build directly on Fin's underlying AI Technology.
● Voice – an emerging channel extending Fin's resolution capability into spoken customer interactions.
Fin Key Competitors
The AI customer service category has become crowded fast, and Fin now competes on two fronts: helpdesk incumbents that have bolted AI onto an existing platform, and standalone AI agent specialists that plug into whichever helpdesk a business already runs. If you are exploring this market and want to understand who else you should be considering alongside Fin, the Viewpoint Analysis Longlist Builder is a good place to start. Answer a few questions about your requirements and we will come back with a comprehensive report covering all the vendors worth considering for your shortlist.
Zendesk – the closest like for like rival, having built AI agent capability natively into its own long established helpdesk rather than acquiring it, which suits buyers who want one vendor for the whole support stack.
Decagon – an enterprise-focused AI agent platform known for heavier engineering controls and structured, rules-based agent behavior, typically positioned above Fin on price and complexity.
Sierra – founded by former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, Sierra sells outcome-based, custom-built agents to large enterprises and competes for the same marquee accounts as Fin.
Ada – a longer established automation platform with particular strength in multilingual deployments, often evaluated by mid market and enterprise buyers alongside Fin.
Freshworks (Freddy AI) – the AI layer inside Freshdesk, a natural comparison for buyers already committed to the Freshworks ecosystem.
