Who are Coupa?

Coupa is one of the best-known names in business spend management, the category of software that brings sourcing, procurement, invoicing, payments, expenses and supplier management together on one platform. For many large organisations it sits alongside the ERP as the system employees use to buy things and the system finance uses to control and pay for them. Over the past year Coupa has also changed hands at the top and made a run of acquisitions aimed at putting AI agents to work across the purchasing process, so there is plenty for buyers to weigh up if Coupa is on their list for a source-to-pay or spend management project.

Viewpoint Analysis is a Technology Matchmaker, helping businesses to quickly find and select new enterprise technology. Our aim is to be the place enterprise buyers go to understand the software and technology market before speaking to vendors. Read on to learn more about Coupa!

Who Are Coupa?

Coupa was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Foster City, California. The company was listed on Nasdaq for several years before private equity firm Thoma Bravo took it private in a deal completed in February 2023, valuing the business at around $8 billion including debt. It has been privately owned since.

Coupa is currently led by interim CEO Mike Lipps, who was appointed in August 2026 after Leagh Turner stepped down for personal reasons, having run the company since November 2023. Lipps is an Operating Partner at Thoma Bravo and has previously been CEO of insightsoftware and Intelerad Medical Systems, as well as spending 14 years at Intuit, where he ran QuickBooks.

Coupa marked its 20th anniversary in 2026 and now describes itself as a platform for autonomous spend management. It reports a network of more than 11 million buyers and suppliers transacting through its platform, and a community dataset built from more than $10 trillion of spend, which it uses for benchmarking and to train its AI capabilities. Product and technology are led by Chief Product and Technology Officer Salvatore Lombardo.

What Does Coupa Do?

The simplest way to explain what Coupa does is that it controls how money leaves a business. A typical flow starts with an employee asking to buy something, moves through approval, becomes a purchase order sent to a supplier, and finishes with the supplier invoice being matched, approved and paid. Coupa covers each of those steps, along with the sourcing events and contracts that come before them and the spend analysis that comes after. The company built its early reputation on indirect spend, meaning the goods and services a business buys to run itself rather than the materials that go into its products, and on making that buying experience simple enough that employees actually use it.

Over time the platform has grown well beyond indirect procurement. Coupa added expense management, payments and treasury, and moved into direct spend and supply chain, most notably through its 2020 acquisition of supply chain design specialist LLamasoft. The argument for buying all of this from one vendor is that spend data, supplier records and approval controls sit in one place, rather than being split across several point solutions. Spend management usually sits close to the finance function, and our Finance and ERP Technology page covers the wider market and how procurement and payables software fits alongside core ERP.

The supplier side of the platform is as important as the buyer side. Suppliers receive purchase orders, submit invoices and keep their details up to date through the Coupa Supplier Portal, and the anonymised data generated across all of these transactions feeds Coupa's benchmarking and community insight features. For buyers, the practical benefit is fewer paper invoices, fewer supplier queries, and a better chance of catching duplicate payments and fraud before mon

ey goes out of the door.

The biggest change in the last year has been the push into AI agents. Coupa's agents are branded Navi, and the company says it now has more than 50 of them covering tasks such as payment batch creation, invoice attachment checks, early payment discount capture and expense review. Customers can build their own agents in Agent Studio, and Navi Connect uses the Model Context Protocol to let external AI assistants such as Microsoft Copilot query live spend data. Coupa also bought intelligent document processing firm Rossum and intake and orchestration specialist Tonkean in May 2026, following earlier acquisitions of Cirtuo and Scoutbee. Coupa reports more than 450 customers running its agents in production, but some capabilities are still in limited availability, so buyers should ask which features are generally available in their region today.

Coupa Technology Areas

Coupa groups its platform into the following solution areas, all of which sit within the wider spend management category covered on our Finance and ERP Technology page.

• Source-to-Contract: Category management, sourcing events, sourcing optimisation, contract lifecycle management, and supplier information and risk management.

• Procurement and Intake: Guided buying, purchase requests, intake and orchestration (now including Tonkean), services procurement and inventory management for controlling how employees buy.

• Invoicing and AP Automation: Electronic invoicing, invoice capture and matching, with Rossum document processing now part of Coupa AP Automation.

• Expense Management: Employee expense capture, policy checks and approval, with AI review of expense claims and hotel folios.

• Payments and Treasury: Supplier payments, cash and liquidity management, and fraud protection for outgoing payments.

• Spend Analysis: Reporting and analysis of spend across categories, suppliers and business units, with community benchmarks and the Spend Pulse market intelligence feature.

• Direct Spend and Supply Chain: Direct material sourcing, supply chain network, transportation and inventory optimisation, and PO and forecast collaboration with suppliers.

• Coupa AI and Navi Agents: A library of prebuilt agents, Agent Studio for building custom agents, and Navi Connect for linking Coupa data to external AI assistants.

Coupa Competitors

Coupa competes in a crowded market. At the enterprise end it is most often compared with the procurement offerings of the big ERP vendors and with a handful of independent source-to-pay suites. Below that, a growing group of specialists compete for individual pieces of the process, particularly intake, accounts payable automation and expenses, and some buyers now combine a specialist front end with their ERP rather than buying a full suite. Which comparison matters depends on how much of the process you want to cover, which ERP you run, and how much direct spend is in scope.

Our Coupa Alternatives report looks at the key options when considering options within the market.

Finance Software Longlist and Shortlist Builder

• SAP Ariba: The closest like-for-like competitor for large enterprises, with a long-established supplier network and broad source-to-pay coverage. It is a natural option for organisations standardised on SAP ERP, although buyers often compare user experience and implementation effort closely against Coupa.

• Oracle Fusion Cloud Procurement: Procurement delivered as part of Oracle's cloud ERP suite. It suits organisations already running Oracle Fusion that want procurement on the same data model, while Coupa tends to be considered where a business wants an independent layer that works across several ERPs.

• Ivalua: An independent source-to-pay suite built on a single platform, often shortlisted by organisations with complex or unusual requirements thanks to its configurability. It competes directly with Coupa for enterprise deals covering both direct and indirect spend.

• GEP SMART: A unified source-to-pay platform from GEP, which also offers procurement consulting and managed services. That combination appeals to buyers who want software and outsourced procurement support from the same provider.

• JAGGAER: A long-standing source-to-pay vendor with particular depth in direct materials sourcing and a strong presence in higher education and the public sector. It is worth a look where complex sourcing or sector-specific requirements are high on the list.

• Zip: A specialist in procurement intake and orchestration that sits in front of an ERP or an existing procurement system. It is often compared with Coupa's own intake capabilities by organisations focused on fixing the request and approval experience first.

• SAP Concur: The most widely used alternative for travel and expense management. Buyers who only need expenses, or who want to keep expenses separate from procurement, will usually compare it with Coupa's expense module.

Coupa Customer Examples

Coupa publishes well over a hundred customer stories on its website, spanning retail, manufacturing, financial services, technology and healthcare. The four examples below show the range of the platform, from category strategy and logistics sourcing through to a full procure-to-pay rollout. All figures are as reported by Coupa.

• Walmart: The global retailer uses Coupa Category Strategy to standardise how its international procurement team builds category strategies across markets. The team of around 500 people manages more than $45 billion of indirect spend, and Coupa reports a productivity gain of around 50% in strategy work.

• Eastman: The Tennessee-based specialty materials company uses Coupa Sourcing Optimization to run logistics sourcing, replacing email-based rate requests for ISO tank and lane awards. Coupa reports a 15% reduction in overall logistics spend and more than 1,000 hours saved each year.

• SMBC: The Tokyo-headquartered banking group uses Coupa for source-to-pay, invoicing, contract lifecycle management and supplier risk assessment. The aim was to unify procurement across 40 countries with standard approval workflows and compliance controls suited to a highly regulated business.

• Vanquis: The London-based lender, which provides credit cards and loans, rolled out Coupa procurement, invoicing and supplier risk and performance across several divisions alongside an ERP upgrade. Coupa reports that 99% of invoices are now backed by a purchase order, with $23 million of savings over five years.
