Who are BambooHR?

BambooHR is one of the best-known names in HR software for small and mid-sized businesses, and a vendor that comes up again and again when a growing organisation decides it is time to move its people data off spreadsheets and email. It built its reputation on being easy to use, and in 2026 it has been adding AI agents and connections to AI assistants on top of its core HR platform. For UK and European buyers, there are also some important points to understand about how payroll and benefits work outside the US.

Viewpoint Analysis is a Technology Matchmaker, helping businesses to quickly find and select new enterprise technology. Our aim is to be the place enterprise buyers go to understand the software and technology market before speaking to vendors. Read on to learn more about BambooHR.

Who Are BambooHR?

BambooHR was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Draper, Utah. The company is privately held and is led by CEO Brad Rencher, who took the role in 2019 after a long senior career at Adobe. BambooHR now describes itself as a People Intelligence Platform for small and mid-sized businesses, and it serves more than 30,000 customers in over 190 countries, holding more than 3 million employee records.

The business sells a single cloud platform that brings together core HR, payroll, benefits administration and talent management, with reporting, workflows and AI built in. Its core market is organisations that have outgrown spreadsheets and basic tools but do not need, or want to pay for, a full enterprise HCM suite. The customer stories it publishes range from teams of under 25 people to organisations with more than 1,000 employees. The platform is sold by subscription across Core, Pro and Elite plans, with a flat monthly rate for companies of 25 employees or fewer and per employee pricing above that, and no annual contract is required.

What Does BambooHR Do?

BambooHR is the system of record for your people. It holds employee records, org charts, job and pay history, time off balances and HR documents in one place, and gives employees and managers self-service access so that routine questions and updates do not all land on the HR team. It sits in the core HR, or HRIS, part of the HR Technology market, and for many smaller organisations it is the first proper HR system they buy.

Around that core, BambooHR adds the processes most growing businesses need next. There is applicant tracking and onboarding for hiring, performance management with goals, 360 feedback and custom review cycles, time tracking and scheduling for hourly staff, and an Employee Community feature for company announcements, groups and recognition. Performance Management and Employee Community come with the Pro plan, while Time Tracking is an add-on. BambooHR also runs an Integrations Marketplace so that customers can connect the platform to the payroll, finance and IT tools they already use.

Payroll and Benefits Administration are where UK buyers need to pay attention. Both are BambooHR add-ons for US employees only. For the UK, BambooHR offers an integration with Xero Payroll (announced in December 2025 for the UK, Australia and New Zealand), which pushes employee data one way from BambooHR into Xero, where payroll is then run. For other countries it relies on payroll partners such as Deel, Papaya and Oyster, and offers an Employer of Record service, delivered with Remote, for hiring in more than 90 countries without a local entity. Customer data is hosted in data centres in the US, Canada and Ireland. None of this rules BambooHR out for a UK business, but it does mean you should plan how HR and payroll will work together before you sign.

The biggest change in 2026 has been AI. BambooHR introduced Bamboo AI in July 2026 and opened it as a beta to all customers on the Core, Pro and Elite plans in September. It includes a report assistant that builds custom reports from a plain English request, payroll run comparisons that flag unexplained changes, a scheduling assistant, nightly data quality checks and a "Needs Your Attention" view that turns outstanding approvals and tasks into action cards. In October 2026 BambooHR also released a beta connector that lets customers work with their BambooHR data inside the Claude AI assistant, using their existing permissions, with ChatGPT and Gemini connectors listed as coming soon. Alongside the software, a new BambooHR Expert Services offering pairs customers with HR and platform consultants.

BambooHR Technology Areas

BambooHR covers the following product and solution areas, all of which fall within the wider HR Technology market.

• HR Data and Reporting. Central employee records, org charts and document storage, with standard and custom reporting across the workforce.

• Hiring and Onboarding. Applicant tracking, job posting and structured onboarding for new starters.

• Time Off and Time Tracking. Leave requests and balances, plus a time clock, timesheets, overtime calculation and shift scheduling as an add-on.

• Payroll and Benefits Administration. Payroll processing, tax filing and benefits enrolment for US employees only.

• Performance Management. Goals, 360 feedback, assessment templates and custom review cycles, included in the Pro plan.

• Employee Experience. Employee Community for announcements, groups and recognition, plus employee and manager self-service.

• Global Employment. Employer of Record hiring through Remote and integrations with payroll providers such as Xero Payroll in the UK.

• Bamboo AI. Embedded AI agents for reporting, payroll checks, scheduling and data quality, currently in open beta.

• Integrations Marketplace. Prebuilt connections to third party payroll, finance, IT and recruiting tools.

BambooHR Competitors

The HR software market for small and mid-sized businesses is crowded, and BambooHR is rarely the only option a buyer looks at. US buyers tend to compare it with payroll-led platforms, while UK and European buyers usually find themselves weighing it against vendors that were built for European employment rules and that run payroll natively in their own countries. The right answer depends heavily on where your people are, how you run payroll today and how much of the wider HR, IT and finance stack you want one vendor to cover.

• HiBob. HiBob's Bob platform is aimed at modern, mid-sized and fast-growing companies, and has a strong UK presence. It is often seen as a step up from BambooHR in culture, engagement and compensation features, and tends to suit organisations at the upper end of the mid-market.

• Personio. Personio is a Munich-based HR platform built for small and mid-sized European businesses. Compared with BambooHR it has a stronger focus on European employment compliance and payroll-related processes, which can make it a more natural fit for organisations whose workforce is mainly in Europe.

• Rippling. Rippling combines HR, IT (device and app management) and spend management in one system, and runs its own payroll in a number of countries, including the UK. It suits organisations that want one vendor across HR and IT administration, though it is a broader and more complex product than BambooHR.

• Factorial. Factorial is a Barcelona-based all-in-one HR platform for small and mid-sized businesses, covering core HR, time, expenses and performance. It competes with BambooHR on ease of use and price, and is a common comparison for European companies.

• Access PeopleHR. Part of the UK-based Access Group, PeopleHR is an HR system designed around UK SMEs and can sit alongside Access payroll products. For a UK-only business that wants a local vendor and a joined up payroll option, it is a natural comparison with BambooHR.

• Paylocity. Paylocity is a payroll-first HCM platform for US mid-sized organisations. Where BambooHR started with core HR and added payroll, Paylocity started with payroll, so it is a common comparison for US-heavy businesses where payroll is the main driver.
