Education Software Options 2026/27

Schools, colleges, and universities are all managing the same underlying problem: student data scattered across admissions, attendance, grading, billing, and reporting systems that were never built to talk to each other. The institutions replacing that patchwork in 2026 are not buying a single generic product - the school and the higher education market have largely separate vendor sets, built around very different regulatory and operational requirements. Moreover, education platforms clearly differ from country to country - making the choice even harder.

This guide covers the leading Education software platforms for 2026, split between K-12 student information and school management systems and higher education student information and ERP systems, so buyers can see which market a vendor actually serves. Viewpoint Analysis is a Technology Matchmaker, helping education sector buyers find and select the right technology fast - aiming to be the place buyers go to understand the software and technology market before speaking to vendors.

This guide covers institutional student information and administration software specifically - the systems of record for enrolment, attendance, grading, and compliance reporting - rather than classroom learning management systems or corporate learning platforms, which our separate Learning Management System Software Options 2026 guide covers.

Included Education Software Vendors

This guide covers the following Education software platforms, evaluated independently across K-12 and higher education tiers. Our viewpoint on each vendor follows below.

What Is Education Software?

Education software, in the sense covered here, is the student information system and administrative platform that a school, district, college, or university runs on. It holds the single record of who is enrolled, what they are studying, how they are attending and performing, and what they owe, and it produces the compliance and state or national reporting that institutions are legally required to file. The stronger platforms extend into admissions, billing, family communication, and increasingly analytics that flag attendance or performance issues before they become a bigger problem.

Institutions invest in it to replace manual, spreadsheet-driven administration with a single accurate source of student data, cut the staff time spent on compliance reporting, and give teachers, administrators, and families a shared, real-time view of a student's record.

K-12 Student Information and School Management Software Options 2026

This first tier covers student information and school management systems built for K-12 schools and districts, from large public district deployments to independent and faith-based schools.

PowerSchool

PowerSchool is one of the most widely deployed K-12 student information systems in the United States, covering scheduling, attendance, grading, and state compliance reporting alongside registration and communication tools for educators, students, and guardians. Its PowerTeacher Pro gradebook is frequently cited by reviewers as an industry-leading feature, and the platform is fully web-based, giving real-time updates across any device or browser. PowerSchool integrates with its own broader family of products, including a K-12 learning management system, student data analytics, and school finance and HR software, so districts can extend a core SIS deployment rather than replatforming later. It is aimed at public school districts of essentially any size, from single schools to large multi-site districts.

Our Viewpoint: A strong default choice for public school districts of any size that want the most widely adopted K-12 SIS, with a proven gradebook and a broader product family to extend into as needs grow.

Infinite Campus

Infinite Campus is a K-12 student information system covering student data tracking, scheduling, attendance, grading, and communication, with an in-built learning management system, Campus Learning, bundled alongside the core SIS. Its Campus Analytics module gives districts quantified visibility into attendance, enrolment, assessment, and behaviour trends across schools, which suits district administrators who need to spot patterns rather than review individual student records one at a time. The platform includes onboarding support and parent and student portals as standard, reducing the amount of separate tooling a district needs to run family communication. Infinite Campus is headquartered in Minnesota and serves districts primarily across the United States.

Our Viewpoint: Well suited to districts that want district-wide analytics and reporting built into the core SIS, rather than bolting on a separate reporting layer.

Skyward

Skyward offers the Qmlativ platform, a cloud-native SIS and ERP aimed at school districts that want student information and back-office functions such as HR and payroll managed within a single system. The company has been actively migrating districts off its legacy SMS 2.0 platform onto Qmlativ, with several large districts announcing moves during 2026, so buyers evaluating Skyward should confirm which platform generation is being proposed. Beyond student records, Qmlativ covers enrolment, grading, attendance, scheduling, and discipline management, alongside reporting and communication tools for staff and guardians. Skyward is a long-established vendor in the K-12 market, headquartered in Wisconsin, with a strong base among mid-sized and larger public districts.

Our Viewpoint: A good fit for districts that want student information and core back-office administration, such as HR and payroll, running on one connected platform rather than separate systems.

FACTS SIS

FACTS Student Information System, formerly known as RenWeb, is owned by Nelnet Business Solutions and is widely used by private, faith-based, and independent K-12 schools rather than large public districts. It covers admissions, student records, billing, report cards, grading, attendance, and parent access, and sits alongside Nelnet's broader FACTS suite of tuition management, financial aid assessment, and enrolment management tools. This makes FACTS a natural fit for private and parochial schools that need tuition billing and financial aid administration handled as closely to the SIS as possible, rather than through a separate finance system. The platform is built around the smaller-school, admissions-and-billing-heavy operating model rather than large-district scale.

Our Viewpoint: Particularly strong for private, parochial, and faith-based schools that want student records, admissions, and tuition billing managed within one connected suite.

Veracross

Veracross is a student information system built around a single, unified cloud database, so admissions, academics, billing, and advancement all draw from one shared record rather than being synced between separate modules. This single-database architecture is its main differentiator against legacy platforms that rely on integration between disconnected systems, and it particularly suits independent schools that also need to manage alumni and development relationships alongside current students. Veracross has built a strong international footprint among independent schools across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with reporting and compliance features designed for schools operating outside a single national regulatory framework. It is aimed at independent and international schools rather than large public school districts.

Our Viewpoint: A strong choice for independent and international schools that want one shared record spanning admissions, academics, and alumni relationships, without integrating separate systems.

Higher Education Student Information Software Options 2026

This second tier covers student information and ERP systems built for colleges and universities, where the buying process is typically multi-year and evaluated as much on partner ecosystem and implementation capability as on the product itself.

Ellucian

Ellucian is the largest higher-education-specific technology vendor, serving around 3,000 institutions across 50 countries and more than 21 million students, with a heritage anchored in its Banner and Colleague student information systems. Ellucian Student, introduced as an AI-enabled, SaaS-native platform, is positioned to support the full student lifecycle from recruiting and admissions through advancement. The company completed its acquisition of Anthology's SIS and ERP business on 31 December 2025, adding more than 260 institutions to Ellucian's global community and consolidating two of the sector's largest platforms under one roof. Ellucian's scale and long-standing track record make it the most commonly shortlisted vendor for institutions of nearly any size.

Our Viewpoint: The default starting point for most accredited colleges and universities, combining the largest installed base in higher education with a proven, purpose-built, cloud-native platform.

Workday Student

Workday Student extends Workday's existing HR and finance platform into student information, giving institutions already running Workday for their back office a way to consolidate their student system onto the same platform rather than integrating a separate SIS. It offers a strong API and integration surface designed for connections to learning management systems and identity providers, reflecting Workday's broader platform approach to integration. The product suits large institutions with the budget and internal resources for a complex, multi-year implementation delivered through certified partners. Workday Student is best evaluated by institutions that have already committed to Workday for HR and finance, rather than as a standalone SIS decision.

Our Viewpoint: A strong fit for large institutions already running Workday for HR and finance that want to eliminate a separate student information system as its own vendor relationship.

Oracle Student Cloud

Oracle Student Cloud, part of Oracle Fusion Cloud, is aimed at large research universities and state systems that are already standardised on Oracle for their broader enterprise systems. It links student account transactions directly to academic events such as registration and degree progress, giving finance and academic records a shared, consistent data model rather than separate systems that need reconciling. As with Workday, implementations are complex and require certified partners, and Oracle's installed base in higher education is smaller than Ellucian's, so institutional buyers should weigh available implementation expertise carefully. Oracle Student Cloud suits large, Oracle-standardised institutions more than smaller colleges evaluating a first cloud SIS.

Our Viewpoint: Worth prioritising for large research universities and state systems already standardised on Oracle that want student records tied directly into the same financial and enterprise data model.

Jenzabar

Jenzabar is a long-established higher education vendor focused on small and mid-sized private institutions in the United States, with its Jenzabar One suite bringing together student information, CRM, finance, and analytics in one platform. It is a familiar and well-established alternative to the larger enterprise platforms for institutions that do not need Ellucian or Workday's scale, and is frequently chosen by faith-based and other small private colleges that value affordability and hands-on vendor support. Jenzabar provides a documented API for external automation and bi-directional integrations, though deeper campus-specific workflows may still need custom extension work. The company also holds a significant minority stake in Tribal Group, reflecting a degree of strategic alignment between the two vendors.

Our Viewpoint: A strong option for small-to-mid-sized private or faith-based colleges that want an integrated, higher-education-specialist suite without enterprise-scale cost or complexity.

Tribal SITS

Tribal SITS, known formally as the Student Information Technology Solution, is one of the most widely deployed student information systems in UK higher education, with a meaningful international footprint across Australia and parts of Asia-Pacific. It is built with deep regulatory and reporting alignment for UK-specific statutory requirements, including HESA returns and the Data Futures programme, which purpose-built US platforms typically do not cover natively. Ellucian's proposed acquisition of Tribal lapsed in 2023 after failing to secure shareholder approval, and Tribal remains an independent, publicly listed company. It is the natural first evaluation for UK universities and international institutions that need UK-specific compliance reporting built in rather than added through customisation.

Our Viewpoint: The clear first choice for UK universities and international institutions that need deep, built-in alignment with UK statutory and regulatory reporting requirements.

How to Select Education Software

Sector fit first. K-12 and higher education are largely separate vendor markets with different regulatory, operational, and buyer requirements, so start by confirming a vendor genuinely serves your sector rather than assuming a strong higher education platform will translate to K-12, or vice versa.

Compliance and reporting depth. Confirm the platform natively supports the specific state, national, or sector reporting your institution must file, since retrofitting compliance reporting after go-live is one of the most common sources of implementation delay and cost overrun.

Integration and data ownership. Map which system will own which data object, particularly where a student information system, a learning management system, and a finance or HR platform all touch overlapping records, and confirm the integration approach before committing rather than during implementation.

Implementation partner capability and timeline. For enterprise higher education platforms in particular, the evaluation is as much about the certified implementation partner ecosystem as the product itself, and timelines are typically measured in years rather than months, so factor partner capability and realistic timelines into the decision from the outset.

Summary

Education software splits cleanly along sector lines rather than by which vendor is generally strongest. K-12 schools and districts have a genuine shortlist in PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Skyward, FACTS SIS, and Veracross, each suited to a different mix of public district scale, private school billing needs, or independent school record-keeping. Higher education institutions are working from a smaller, more consolidated field following Ellucian's acquisition of Anthology, with Workday Student, Oracle Student Cloud, Jenzabar, and Tribal SITS offering distinct alternatives depending on existing platform relationships and geography. The right choice depends less on brand recognition and more on whether a vendor's core market, compliance coverage, and implementation partner network genuinely match your institution's sector, scale, and regulatory footprint.
